24 Feb Is Goodyear Making Smart Tires A Reality For Consumers?
The idea of a ‘smart tire’ for self-driving vehicles sounds like something that would have been aired on the Jetson’s in the early 60’s. Flashing forward almost 6 decades later it sounds perfectly normal! So when the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company announced their work on a connected tire that would one-day “talk” to self-driving vehicles about enhanced performance and safety, things seem to be getting really fun.
After compiling millions of miles of test data from field trials with customers, Goodyear’s connected tires–tires made with an embedded sensor–revealed that the tires could reduce stopping distances lost between a new and worn tire by 30%. This point alone makes a huge impact on self-driving vehicles and their ability to maintain safety for riding passengers.
Goodyear has not released these connected tires to consumers yet, but wouldn’t you want a set for your vehicle? Even if you are still behind the wheel, making good driving decisions…it would be great to have tires that could also help maneuver during difficult or dangerous driving conditions.
